The Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery is one of Branson’s most beloved attractions, and the best part is that it’s free to the public! The hatchery has been open since 1958 and is the Missouri Department of Conservation’s largest trout-rearing facility. Trout flourish in Lake Taneycomo’s cold waters. The hatchery produces between 350,000-400,000 pounds of brown and rainbow trout each year, 85 percent of which goes to stock Lake Taneycomo. Groups can go on guided tours of the hatchery and conservation center or tour the facility at their own pace. The conservation center is the perfect place to learn more about aquatic life, trout culture, fishing, and much more. Surrounding the hatchery are trails available for nature walks and hiking, public fishing access, and areas for sightseeing and bird watching.
